Snoring isn’t just a nighttime annoyance—it can also point to a more serious condition like obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which affects airflow and sleep quality. Oral appliance therapy offers a non-invasive, comfortable alternative to CPAP therapy for many patients.
At Southern Cross Dental, we support a selection of custom anti-snoring devices for dentists, crafted with precision and tailored to individual clinical needs. Below is a guide to the sleep apnoea dental appliances we currently support through our dental lab, along with their core design features, clinical benefits, and expected turnaround times.
Silensor-SL
The Silensor-SL is a dual-splint appliance, one clear tray for the upper jaw and one for the lower. These trays are connected by lateral plastic arms, which gently advance the lower jaw to increase airway space and reduce snoring.
Key Features:
- Lightweight and non-bulky
- Allows natural jaw movement and mouth opening
- Interchangeable connector arms for adjustable protrusion
- Suitable for patients seeking a balance between comfort and adjustability
- Turnaround Time: Approximately 10–12 working days from case receipt
- Best suited for patients seeking a discreet and flexible oral appliance therapy for snoring. It also serves as a non-invasive snoring solution and a reliable oral device for obstructive sleep apnoea.
EMA® (Elastic Mandibular Advancement)
The EMA is an entry level appliance and shares a similar design to the Silensor-sl but swaps out the rigid plastic arms for elastic straps. These elastic connectors come in a variety of lengths and stiffness levels, making it highly adaptable.
Key Features:
- Uses replaceable elastic straps for mandibular advancement
- Easy to maintain and adjust
- Allows limited jaw movement for added comfort
- Lightweight feel encourages compliance
- Turnaround Time: Approximately 10–12 working days from case receipt
- Best suited for patients who value a low-maintenance, adaptable mandibular advancement device for snoring. This appliance is also a great option when considering alternatives to CPAP in dentistry.
The Moses® Appliance
The Moses is a sturdier oral appliance that includes side screws for precise mandibular advancement. Unlike Silensor or EMA, it restricts significant jaw movement but is built to last with its robust design.
Key Features:
- Precision screws for titratable advancement
- Stable fit with reduced lateral movement
- May feel bulkier initially but offers secure retention
- Designed with patient airway optimisation in mind
- Turnaround Time: Approximately 12–14 working days from case receipt
- Best suited for patients requiring higher stability and more controlled advancement through dental sleep solutions Australia. It stands out in cases needing comfort and compliance in anti-snoring appliances.
Damon Splint
The Damon Splint is a compact, fixed design that connects the upper and lower retainers at the posterior. Made from hard/Hard acrylic with a soft internal lining which can be optional, it’s known for its strong fit and minimalist profile.
Key Features:
- Restricts jaw movement for enhanced stability
- Compact and durable construction
- Features anterior opening for airflow
- No adjustability, but consistent fit
- Turnaround Time: Approximately 10–12 working days from case receipt
- Best suited for patients who prefer a simple, sturdy appliance with minimal maintenance—ideal for general dentists seeking snoring dental solutions for patients. It offers an effective comparison in the discussion of snoring devices vs mouth-guards.
The Dorsal Appliance
The Dorsal Appliance features a unique dorsal fin design positioned toward the back of the mouth. This allows for lateral and excursive jaw movement while also preventing unwanted jaw rotation during sleep. It’s designed with patient comfort in mind and offers a discreet profile.
Key Features:
- Dorsal fin allows lateral and excursive movement
- Prevents lower jaw from rotating open
- Comfortable and discreet to wear
- Requires minimal chairside adjustment
- Clinical Requirements: Maxillary and mandibular impressions or scans, plus protrusive bite registration
- Turnaround Time: Approximately 12–14 working days from case receipt
- Best suited for patients seeking a stable, comfortable mandibular advancement appliance that requires minimal adjustment and supports long-term compliance and comfort.
How to take an Impression for your Chosen Anti – Snoring Appliance:
Traditional upper and lower PVS impressions are suitable, along with a PVS rigid bite taken at 55% protrusive or in centric (CIP). If a centric bite is provided, our lab can articulate to the optimal 55% position. Alternatively, upper and lower intraoral scans (IOS) can be submitted. Our team can still articulate to the appropriate bite position if required.
These techniques help ensure a functional and precise fit for mandibular advancement appliances and contribute to consistent outcomes within our standard turnaround timelines.
